We’re up and ready to head home as the flood tide opens the entrance to South Deep. We’re soon reminded of the joys of anchoring in mud. By the time we’re off, both skipper and foredeck are well coated. We’re at the harbour entrance by the time Louise has got the boat cleaned up, if not the skipper! There’s 4kts of tide running against us as we creep out and escape through the East Loop Channel. From there the tide is with us. We see a couple of boats sailing slowly, but we join the majority motoring to get into the Solent before the tide turns. Eventually we hoist the main and get a little help from it as we approach the Needles. Once past Hurst we add the foresails and get 2 tacks in before the wind fades to nothing. Engine back on and head for home. The rain catches us as we approach Calshot and it looks as though half the boats in the Solent are running away from it.
