The forecast for Sunday includes the chance of gales, so we may be coming straight back tomorrow. The wind is lighter than forecast as we motor out of the Hamble and we’re sailing under full main by the time we leave the river entrance. We meet ‘East Breeze’ going the other way off Calshot. She’s been to Lymington to be measured to for a new mainsail. Then it’s hard on the wind and a slow beat against the tide. We keep tight to the shore and make good progress around Lepe Spit. ‘Carlotta’ comes out of Cowes and across ahead of us, then she puts her engine on and plugs ahead into the wind and tide. We see ‘High Barbaree’ up ahead. She does the same.

The sun’s out and the sea is flat, so we keep beating up the North shore for another 1.5hrs. It’s now clear that we’re not going to get to Yarmouth before dark, so after ‘Jolie Brise’ passes, motoring the other way, we put on the engine. Another hour takes us into Yarmouth. We’ve booked and they’ve kept an easy straight-in finger berth for us.

We join ‘High Barbaree’ for rum and orange. ‘Hester’ soon turns up, after a quick motor from Lymington. We all enjoy dinner at The Kings Head.
