It’s warm and sunny as we set off. The gentle South Westerly lets us hoist the main as we head out of the river. Then it’s a gentle sail with the last of the ebb tide. It’s a busy day for shipping in Southampton Water, so we tack back to the East to keep out of the way. Then it’s a struggle to get back West, including negotiating a dredger, which turns back on it’s course just as we clear it.
At Calshot Spit the tide has turned against us and it’s slow progress against both wind and tide. A long tack out gets us away from the early change in direction of the tide. Eventually we’re close to Lepe Spit buoy, but back against a growing tide. The engine goes on and we motor around the corner and up Beaulieu River.
It’s not busy and we opt for the visitor’s pontoon, just above Bucklers Hard. David, on Satellite soon joins us, from exploring higher up the river. It’s a peaceful evening and we settle in for shepards pie.
