We have a full crew today, with light winds forecast again. There’s another postponement, then we’re away with a decent start on a fetch across the Solent. The wind swings round behind us and dies. As the tide starts to carry us West, it’s time to try out temporary cruising chute rig. We’re soon gybing backwards and forwards at ‘North East Gurnard’ and eventually make progress North and out of t tide. We prove that the sail does not work well deep downwind as ‘Spinaway’ and ‘Winifred’ pass us on more direct courses. Still we perform several gybes and drop the cruising chute again, without any problem. We need a permanent halyard, possibly higher up the mast. The race is shortened as we reach across to ‘South Bramble’, then back to Cowes.
This evening is the reception on the RYS lawn, followed by supper on the top floor of ISC.
