The morning starts foggy and windless. We’re held for 2hrs in the harbour. Eventually we’re out, with topsail and yankee jib set. The delayed start means that we’re nearing the end of the flood tide. We get a good downwind start and lead round the first mark. From there the fleet splits, with a few of us riding the last of the tide up the middle of the Solent to ‘Solent Bank’. We’re straight downwind and just late on the tide. It takes us an hour. Then we’re quickly back to ‘Berthon’ and decide to risk a reach across the Solent and back before heading for the finish. Our reach becomes another downwind leg, meaning that we’re just late at the finish. We’ve had a good sail and seem to have covered good distance.
Once back in port a contradiction in the sailing instructions is revealed, so we’ll have to wait and see how the results come out.
It’s Friday evening at Yarmouth Gaffers, so we’re all into YSC for a meal and music.
